My husband created a great system, which is easy to follow and use. In addition, it is a system that will help you today, tomorrow, and well into the future.
I am thrilled that I was attentive to his descriptions of how to run a household. My role as his wife throughout the years has mostly been, “la dee dee, la dee da,” meaning all is well and I am happy-go-lucky. It also meant that he organized all the bill-paying, home maintenance, vital documents such as wills, mortgages, insurance, etc. And, yes, that included all the worrying. One day he asked me, “What happens if, let’s say I leave for a few months, how would you manage the household?”
Rude awakening. My “La dee dee” life started to flash before my eyes. Why would he ask such a question? He refers to his grand inquiry as, “What if you’re the last man standing?” With my eyes wide open, I decided it was time to learn how to organize, run, and manage our household. Sure, I had practice operating and managing businesses over the years, but our household was a different story.
In learning how to manage an efficient household, I gained knowledge of what is important and what is not. When it comes to operating a household, I learned that every household has its own routines and systems. But there are some similarities. For instance, you may have hundreds of contacts and logins used for online purchases, online payments, maintenance contractors, painters, window washers, and other services such as medical, you name it. My question to you would be…which contacts are the most important ones used to run your household? Also, which are important in case of an emergency?
With the guidebook, “The Fun-duh-mental Household: 5 Steps for Organizing Your Home Using an SOP (Standard Operating Procedure)” you learn to structure your most important contacts and logins in an organized manner. As Step 1 of the system describes in the guidebook, you will keep this document updated on a regular basis. By doing so, your spouse, trusted friend, or family member can help run your home smoothly even when you are not available to do so.
The main objective of the guidebook is to organize every aspect of the routines needed to run your household. It creates peace-of-mind. When one person in the family is the main contributor to managing the household, it is a welcome relief when systems are shared and understood. It makes life easier and makes a huge difference in the functionality of that household.
The Fun-duh-mental Household is broken down into five steps. In my next blog, I’ll talk about Routine Projects and Tasks of the household.
